I’m currently working at SideQuest Gamers Hub, a London based gaming cafe, as its Copywriter and a Shift Leader. My first month consisted of managaing teams, customer service, making drinks and advertising our services to customers. During this time I was able to analyse our clientele and capabilities as a company and then created a PowerPoint (attached on the right) detailing copywriting materials that would help attract and engage certain audiences and be a touchstone for customers and staff alike should they need help understanding how SideQuest operates. For example, as we are located in a large shopping centre we attract a lot of casual gamers so an article recommending new and seasonal games enables them to find a game they may like faster. For our more experienced gamers I also created articles outlining tournaments and events organised by liasing with our events team which I helped run by managing staff to ensure everything went smoothly.

For a more comprehensive look at these examples and for other types I wrote, see below.

As stated above, SideQuest has a diverse demographic spanning people aged 6-60 from experienced gamers to people who are seeking a safe space and community to try. Thus when writing an article I was sure to identify who I was writing for primarily and what they would want to know and then cater my language to make them feel engaged and excited.

Below this is demonstrated by comparing how the two articles read and what they focus on. Where the Halloween/Spooky Season article uses more standard language to explain what the game is, how they play, how many people you can play with, and how SideQuest is affordble, a good environment, has a good community and has tasty drinks made by helpful staff ensuring someone’s first foree into gaming is an exciting and welcoming one.

The boba discount/free gaming hours one, however is written to our more hardcore audience who is already aware of how we operate so uses in game references like eco in games as well as in game items like Junkrat’s boba victory pose showing that we get them and want them to celebrate gaming with likeminded individuals which SideQuest is surrounded by. While this article is catered towards a more hardcore audience it still makes sure that a more causal reader isn’t alienated by the plainer language and recommendations present in the promotional material.
